A Bar Wedding in Toronto: An Evening at Bar Pompette
AURA PHOTO
A bar wedding in Toronto is mostly a question of restraint. Bar Pompette's room on College Street is already composed long before anyone arrives: a marble bar, leather banquettes, whitewashed walls and soft pendant light, the whole space feeling like a Parisian café that happens to sit in the middle of Little Italy. Our work there is not to arrange the room. It is to stay close to it, and to photograph the day the way the room shapes it.
Aura Photo wedding photography in Toronto takes us into a lot of different rooms, and this one is small enough that the whole day happens inside it: the ceremony, the portraits, the dinner and the bar afterwards. Everyone stays within a few steps of everyone else, and because there is no distance to cross, the day keeps its own pace. The room is the setting; the photographs stay on the people in it.

The Ceremony: A Bar Wedding in Toronto, Under String Lights
By the afternoon, greenery and white fabric have been worked into the corners of the back patio, and the lights come up as the daylight drops. The ceremony is short and close: an officiant reading from a folder, the two of them standing a step apart with no aisle to walk, the ring box already in the hands of someone in the front row. It is over quickly. There is no procession to manage, only the exchange itself, and that is where we keep the camera.

Afterward the marriage licence is signed at a table under white panelling, the bouquet set down beside the papers. It is the quietest thing in the day, and we photograph it exactly as it happens.

Bar Wedding Portraits on College Street
A few steps from the door, College Street does most of the work for us. White-painted storefronts, wide sidewalks, windows that throw light back at the couple: the street is busy, and the portraits pick that up. This is a modern wedding in Toronto in the most literal sense — the neighbourhood becomes the second venue, and we use as much of it as the two of them want.

We keep the walking simple, and we plan the day around the light rather than the other way around: how a wedding day timeline comes together is where that starts.

What the city gives this kind of wedding is texture more than scenery — brick, glass, streetcar tracks, the way the light shifts between storefronts. When the day runs in black and white, the walk usually leads, and you can see the same neighbourhood handled the same way in photographs from other Toronto weddings.
The Bar Wedding Dinner, and Cocktails After Dark
Dinner is a long table with low arrangements and a printed card for each table. Their own cocktail list sits at every place setting, with a line drawing of the two of them raising glasses. Bar Pompette is a cocktail bar first, and the room is built around the bar: the drinks are made in front of you, and the evening slows down there.

After dark the room compresses. The bride changes into a sequined dress, the couple moves to the bar, and the last part of the evening happens in the warmest light in the building. The neon above the bar is their own, and it stays on for the photographs.

A bar wedding keeps everyone in one room for most of the day, and this one never went far from the bar. We work it the same way throughout — close to the room, inside its light, with as little arranging as we can manage.
